CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION

PDC Vinos y Licores supports all educational and pedagogical campaigns that seek to prevent drivers from being drunk and becoming a danger behind the wheel. Colombian law allows up to 0.4 of breathalyzer (grams of alcohol per liter of blood).

Alcohol circuit in the body

From the moment we consume an alcoholic drink until the moment the body eliminates it, ethanol travels through our body. Defined in 3 stages:

  • Absorption

When consuming an alcoholic drink, the route will always be the same ... when consuming alcohol it passes through the esophagus and stomach before reaching the small intestine it is absorbed by the body. Alcohol is low in molecular weight and therefore does not require a digestion process. The rate at which the body absorbs alcohol into the blood is relative to the amount of food in the stomach. It acts as a physical barrier to the intestine it is finally absorbed. The slower the absorption rate, the lower the degree of alcohol (Breathalyzer: amount of alcohol x liter of blood).

  • Distribution

alcohol travels through the blood through the body, diffusing into cells of different organs and tissues, it is absorbed in proportion to the water content in your body. Women have a lower proportion of water than men, which is why alcohol is more concentrated, reaching a higher level of breathalyzer than men at the same amount of alcohol consumed.

  • Metabolization / Elimination

transformation process through biochemical changes. One of these biochemical processes is Oxidation. Through oxidation, about 90% of the alcohol absorbed is metabolized by the liver (the rest is eliminated through urine and perspiration). The liver can metabolize approximately 8-10 grams of alcohol per hour and a little less for women. It is absorbed faster than it is eliminated so we must consume in moderation and responsibility.

Standard Beverage Units (UBE):

In order to unify criteria when calculating alcohol consumption, the World Health Organization (WHO) agreed to its measurement through the Standard Drink Unit (UBE).

Each UBE supposes between 8-12 grams of pure alcohol. With a UBE we can measure the amount of pure alcohol, not the amount of liquid consumed. A healthy liver can metabolize a UBE in 60 to 90 minutes.

The recommendation that the WHO makes us is to consume alcohol responsibly!

Men = Do not exceed 30 grams of alcohol per day

Women = Do not exceed 20 grams of alcohol daily

There are some detailed formulas below to calculate BAC levels in the body.

How to calculate the grams of pure alcohol in a drink:

Each UBE supposes between 8-12 grams of pure alcohol. With a UBE we can measure the amount of pure alcohol, not the amount of liquid consumed. A healthy liver can metabolize a UBE in 60 to 90 minutes.

Milliliters of alcoholic drink x graduation of that drink x 0.8)

Example: if you drank 300ml of wine containing 12 proof, the amount of alcohol ingested is:

300 x 12 x 0.8 = 28.8 degrees of pure alcohol 100

Formula to calculate blood alcohol level (men):

Grams of Alcohol

Weight in Kg. X .7

Formula to calculate blood alcohol level (women):

Grams of Alcohol

Weight in Kg. X .6
